A record 485 Ph.D. degrees awarded in 71 subjects; over 67,000 degrees conferred

DU Convocation shows women on top

NEW DELHI: Shikha Gupta's eyes sparkled with excitement as she juggled her multiple certificates and gold medals. It was the 87 {+t} {+h} Annual Convocation of Delhi University on Saturday at which Shikha received a grand total of seven awards for excelling in a subject that many dread -- Mathematics.

Buoyed with joy, Shikha said: “I received five gold medals and two prizes for my performance in M.Sc. Mathematics. During my undergraduate days at Kirori Mal College my teachers helped me a great deal .”

Currently pursuing her M.Phil. in Mathematics with plans for a Ph.D., Shikha received the M. Makhan Lal Gold Medal, Prof. Ram Behari Medal, Shri Ram Chandra Memorial Medal, J. N. Mitra Memorial Medal, Prof M.C. Puri Memorial Gold Medal, Lala Banarsi Dass Charity Trust Prize and Kumari Rajeshwari Razdan Memorial Prize.

Shikha has earlier received three gold medals and a prize for her performance in B.Sc. Maths (Honours).

It was a joyous occasion for many others too who converged in robes of yellow and red to receive their certificates, prizes and medals.

The Convocation saw over 67,000 degrees being conferred on students for 2008-09 including those who have lately become entitled to degrees. A record 485 Ph.D. degrees were awarded in 71 subjects. Apart from the Ph.D. degrees and some other degrees, the rest were conferred in absentia.

Toppers in different courses and subjects were awarded 184 medals and prizes of which women bagged a sizeable chunk of 138. Three medals were constituted reportedly for the first time for disabled students of which two were awarded. No candidate was reported to have qualified for the third medal.

Also for the first time, the convocation was transmitted through the website www.du.ac.in and broadcast live on the DU Community radio 90.4 Mhz. Plasma screens were placed near the venue.

Delivering the Convocation Address, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Union Government Dr. R. Chidambaram, who was the Chief Guest, said: “Delhi University has a great tradition and many great scientists and academicians have taught here. In terms of its academic excellence and research quality DU continues to be among the top few universities in India.”

Lauding academic initiatives undertaken by DU, Dr. Chidambaram said: “As we reach global standards in more and more frontier areas of science, the need for large-scale development of young human resource in science and technology areas will become imperative and universities should gear themselves up for this task.”

Speaking about the problem of attracting and retaining talent in basic sciences, Dr. Chidambaram suggested beginning five-year integrated courses in pure sciences. He said other fields besides science too had to attract and retain talent.
